The Benson House Nomination Project

The Benson Home, circa 1830s, is in the Brewer community of Lee County, Mississippi and it considered one of the oldest standing cabins in the area. The house originally had two detached log cabins, one for living and one detached structure for cooking. Examination of the home revealed that the rafters in the loft were made from hand-hews logs and supported by saplings. According to the 1836 Itawamba County book of deeds, indicates that a Chickasaw woman by the name of “Abbittahnoya” was the first recorded owner of the Benson home place property. According to old land deed records, Abbittahnoya sold it to Henry Cook in 1838 for $1,000. Learn more about the nomination project here.
